DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMETRICS
With the Higher Education Law published in 1982, one of the departments established within the Faculty of Economics was the Department of Econometrics. The Econometrics department which offers eight semesters, consists of two sub-departments as Statistics and Operations Research. Although econometrics discipline started to provide education as a department by 1982, foundations of the department are based on the years of 1930`s in the world and 1960`s in Turkey. In the birth of econometrics department, the search for understanding and solving economic problems and theories was the main factor. Today, especially development of new econometric methods sheds light on the understanding and interpretation of the economics. Also, Econometrics department has a wide range of applications with the offered methods in the field of Health Sciences along with many other fields in the social sciences apart from economics.
In line with the studies on econometric modeling, Statistics and Operations Research, Wassily Leontief (1973), Lawrance Klein (1980), Trygve Haavelmo (1989), John Forbes Nash (1994), Vernon L. Smith (2002), Robert F. Engle and Clive Granger (2003), Thomas J. Sargent and Christopher A. Sims (2011) have taken their place in history as scientists who have been awarded by "Nobel Prize for Economy" with their works. These developments show that Econometrics is a very valuable and important discipline.
Graduates can find a very broad range of career opportunities in public and private sectors and can work in Ministry of Development, Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI), Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT), Capital Markets Board (CMB), Ministry of Treasury and Finance (MTF), Borsa Istanbul (BIST),
research units of all banks and ministries, insurance and research companies. In addition, they have career opportunities in every business line in which economists are employed.
In the Department of Econometrics where teaching members and assistants dominate the literature and additionally contribute to the existing literature, courses covering theoretical and applied fields of econometrics, theoretical and applied statistics, linear-nonlinear programming, target programming, production and supply chain and decision-making techniques are taught. In addition, the curriculum of the department offers courses that improve the students' programme using and programming skills. Department of Econometrics provides education at the levels of Undergraduate, 4 Master and 1 Doctorate programs.
Before the department of Econometrics was established, there were two disciplines within the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University, namely, Econometrics and Planning Discipline and Statistical Discipline.
In the context of the reorganization of universities in accordance with the Higher Education Law published in 1982; by the transition from the disciplinary structure to the department structure, one of the departments established within the Faculty of Economics was the Department of Econometrics. Thus, the Econometrics Department, which offers eight semesters and consists of three sub-departments, was established.
Prof.Dr. Ahmet KILIÇBAY is the founding president of the Econometrics department. Since the establishment, our department heads are as follows; Professor Dr. Ahmet KILIÇBAY, Prof. Dr. Haluk CILLOV, Prof. Dr. Ali ÖZGÜVEN, Prof. Dr. Ahmet M. GÖKÇEN, Prof. Dr. A. Karun NEMLİOĞLU and, Prof. Dr. Nilgün is ÇİL. Prof. Dr. Nilgün ÇİL has been the head of the department since 2012.
Dear students,
Maybe you haven't joined our family yet, maybe you're about to join. As you know, since modeling in health, science and social sciences is very important today, the Department of Econometrics has a special place in Faculty of Economics. Now I would like to tell you something about the Department of Econometrics.
Our students have the opportunity to analyze both macro and micro economic relations better with the help of econometrics, mathematics, statistics and computer lessons they take with their customized contents.
Econometric methods, statistical techniques, almost engineering level mathematics, the use of many computer programs and computer programming also provide a solid infrastructure for our students to train themselves in modern fields such as data mining, data science and, artificial intelligence.
We do not say goodbye to our graduate students. With our master and doctorate programs, we do our best to make our students specialize in the special fields of Econometrics, Statistics and Operations Research and to use this expertise as a step at market level or academic careers. Our department is a pioneer in terms of training human resources in these fields with its undergraduate, graduate and, doctorate programs.
